We have a year long curriculum that we follow during the academic year at Flowergarten.  Each month we learn about a specific theme with every week having its own sub-topic.  Examples of our weekly topics include animals, colors, numbers, family, maps, weather, seasons, etc.  Below is an example of our daily routine on a week we learned about animals.  

7:30 to 9:00 –free play

This is the time when children are arriving at school.  We have 2-3 teachers playing different games with the children. One teacher might be playing musical chairs, another teacher coloring with kids, and the other playing pexeso, a memory game, with the kids. Children can choose which game they want to play once they arrive at school. Sometimes children decide to play with their own toys they brought to school. In this case the teacher will join the game speaking English in order to encourage the children to play in English as well. The children also like to make puzzles, play hide and seek, and construct castles from wooden blocks.

9:00 to 9:30 – Circle Time
We start our day at Flowergarten with circle time when most of the children have already arrived. Teachers and children sit in a circle. Circle time starts with the teacher asking the children how they are today. We talk about why we are having a good or bad day, etc. We then talk about what day of the week it is, review our days of the week, talk about what month it is and what the weather is normally like during this month, and what the weather is like today.

After the introduction, we start talking about the subject we are studying this week which is animals. We incorporate the subject of the week into a game by playing “pass the parcel”. We have a parcel wrapped with several layers. Each layer has a picture of an animal on it. One teacher starts playing music and the children pass the parcel until the music stops.

Whoever has the parcel when the music stops must unwrap one layer of the parcel. The music then starts again and the children continue to play the game until all the children have a  layer from the parcel. We then go around the circle and each child says their name and what animal they have. For example, “My name is Neli and I am a horse”! The teacher then asks what noise horses make and the children all say, “Iha”! We continue around the circle until all the children have said their name and the animal the received. After playing this game, we have “show and tell”.

The child can bring a new toy or picture to school and show it to all of the kids during show and tell. We go around the circle taking turns showing what we brought for “show and tell” and talking about the item. The teachers will asks kids various questions about their “show and tell” like “Is the toy new?”, “What color is your toy?”, etc. We then conclude circle time by singing various songs that include movement like “head, shoulder, knees, and toes”. These activities are aimed to improve the children's fine motor skills. Afterwards, we wash our hands for snack.

9:30 to 10:00 – Morning Snack
Children are divided into 3 different groups according to age. The classes are Tulips, Roses, and Lilies. Each class has it's own classroom. Snack is normally whole wheat bread with cheese, ham, or some kind of spread and 2-3 kinds of vegetables. The children are also given fruit tea. On Tuesdays the children make their own snack. This gets the children involved in snack and teaches them how to make their own snack. Each class has a tray with different foods set up. The children get bread and choose what spread they want. They also choose what vegetables they want. The teachers assist the children in spreading the child's spread of choice on the bread.

10:00 to 11:00 – Project
The children make a craft with their teacher for morning project. Since our topic for this week is animals, we make a lion masks using paper plates, colors, and string.  We draw a lions face on the paper plate and color it. The teacher assists the children and show them what a lion's face looks like and what colors they should use. The teacher then helps the children attach the string to the paper plate so that it can be worn as a mask! We will use our lion masks in the garden to play!

11:00 to 11:30 – Outside Play

If the weather permits, we will all go to the garden to play. The teachers will play various games with the children. We will use our masks we made during project time for an outside game. The children will pretend to be a pack of lions. They will choose a leader of the pack, mommy lions, cub lions, and daddy lions. The daddy lions will hunt for food while the mommy lions take care of the cubs. After our game, we will go inside school to wash our hands and prepare for lunch.

11:30 to 12:30 – Lunch
Children have lunch with their class in their classroom. Lunch is typical Czech cuisine provided by a local school cafeteria. After lunch, we all brush our teeth before having a rest in the play room.

12:30 to 1:30 – Quiet Time
During quiet time children are given pillows and blankets. They sit quietly while listening to a story read to them by a teacher. Today we will read “Smiley Shark”.  After the story, we will listen to soft music and relax. The children have the option of sleeping, resting, or quietly browsing our books.

1:30 to 2:00 – Free Play
If the weather permits, we go outside to play. The teachers will have different stations set up for the children to play games at. The children are free to choose which station they want to join. Today, one teacher will be playing “Piggie in the Middle”  which is a ball game, the other teacher will be playing “What's the time Mr. Wolf?” and the other teacher will be building sandcastles with the children in our sandbox. After our games, we head inside to wash our hands and prepare for afternoon snack.

2:00 to 2:30 – Afternoon Snack
Afternoon snack consists of tea, yogurt or musli with milk and 2-3 kinds of fruit.

2:30 to 3:30 – Project
Our afternoon project is generally one big project that all the kids join. Today we will make a zoo! We went to the zoo for our weekly trip yesterday so this afternoon we talk about the different animals we saw at the zoo. With a big piece of paper we will draw the layout of the zoo with the different areas, water, and trees. We will then each draw our favorite animal we saw at the zoo, cut it out, and glue it onto the zoo in the appropriate areas. Afterwards, we will hang our zoo in our classroom for everyone to see!

3:30 to 5:00 – Free Play
Two to 3 teachers will be with the children during this time. All the classes will join together to play in either the playroom or outside depending on the weather. The teachers will have stations set up again. Afternoon play is usually more relaxed as children are tired and parents start picking kids up. We will build puzzles, make train tracks, and play card games.

All interaction with teachers is in English.
